Furniture Storage

Storing furniture in facilities is a great way to keep it safe & secure while you no longer need it for your home.  Storing furniture with proper preparations and packing is the vital key when it comes to retaining your furnitures original finish, shape & beauty until you wish to utlilize it in another part of your home.  By using our furniture storage guide you can be sure to protect your sofas, tables, beds and any other furniture items that you may need to store.

When searching for a facility, compare units that are climate controlled with different prices and terms.  When finding furniture storage, locations, price and hours of operation are very important to ensure that you may 24 hour access to all your personal & business items.  Compare a few facilities that you have chosen and take a tour before you sign a contract.  Remember to choose a size that meets your needs and budget that can accomodate all of your needs for storing furniture.  Moisture is the number one cause of damage to furniture and should be your number one important factor when storing furniture.

Keep plastic sheets on hand to use as a moisture barrier in between the furniture and also protect of scraps and scratch when loading or unloading during the move.  Also, lay plastic sheets on the entire floor area of the storage space to prevent mositure and humidity from the concrete that could develop devasting mold growth.  Stacking your furniture on top of wooden pallets also helps keep moisture away while allowing your stored furniture to breathe.  Insurance is a important way to protect you while you are storing furniture in any place.  Companies offer little when it comes to compensation or liability should you suffer damage.

Packing furniture is  as important as storing furniture itself.  You want to ensure that your furniture will  look it did at the time of storage.  If possible, when storing furniture disassemble beds and tables to a better fit.  Wrap a thick blanket or quilt around headboards and tabletops to protect against needless damage.  Drawers make great boxes when storing furniture.  Remove the drawers and use them as self storage boxes to save you money and space.  Using towels allows you to make a buffer between your items to prevent shifting.  Light bulbs and shades from lamps should be removed and placed with bubble wrap in a storage box that will protect them from damage and the elements.

Storing furniture that is glass tabletops and mirrors and have a masking tape "X" to prevent shattering in case the glass is broken or cracks.  Attach a sheet of corrugated cardboard of the right size on each side of the glass for extra protection against breakage.  When storing (TV) televisions use the original packing if at all possible and move very carefully.  Fill any empty spaces in your storage box with bubble wrap to prevent the storage boxes from collapsing from the weight of storage boxes that are stacked on top of each other.

Secure your furniture storage space with a sturdy combination lock.  Periodically check on your furniture storage at lease every few months to monitor its condition.  Take an inventory of your personal & business storage belonging to prevent theft.  Report any damage or theft of your storage space to the company and insurance company as soon as you notice.
